If I got more comfortable with the special stage placements in S3K I may grow to fully prefer it.In the videogame, Knuckles relaxes on the island after the duo Sonic and Tails saved it. It might just be experience - I've done way more runs of Mania than I have S3K. Of course, Mania has two big faults that S3K doesn't have: too heavy of a reliance on the classics (reused levels, gimmicks, enemies) over original elements, and lacking bosses (Hydro City and Flying Battery are the standouts there) - and perhaps too many moments where they go for the fun nostalgia reference over something that would be better for the game itself (like, the Mean Bean fight is cool, but if you don't get the reference, then suddenly your 2D platformer becomes a puzzle game for a couple of minutes out of nowhere). The presentation, both of its remakes and its original levels, is stellar, especially that soundtrack. Levels were long but not even in my first playthrough did I ever get a time over, and it's not like S3K doesn't also have it's fair share of super long levels (Carnival Night 2, Sandopolis, Death Egg). but Mania might be the game I like more? It has my favorite special stages by far, and not having to do 14 of them to get all Emerald (having only four zones to find the seven rings in the & Knuckles half is pretty stressful) helps. Boss fights are snappier as well - no super long and confusing fights like Mania's spider boss in Flying Battery and no genre shifts like the Mean Bean fight, the closest to that is the Death Egg 2 fight. It has the better implementation of its bonus stages. It's the more cohesive package, even if it was split into two games at first. ![]()
